To go along with my last few posts, you know now that your health includes 5 different pillars: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, supplementation.

The third pillar of health I want to talk about is sleep. Sleep is SO important to your overall health, yet for some reason it's not something that is often thought of or focused on. If you didn’t know already, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an adult get 7-9 hours of sleep every night. 😳

As a mom, we make sure our kids and family gets everything they need. We are good to sticking to their schedules and meeting their needs. When it comes to our own, we often times don't make our sleep a priority. In order to be sure our family is getting the "best of us and not the rest of us," it's important we make our own health a priority.

With having a 9 month old, I can say first hand that I am not always putting an emphasis on my own sleep. I think this is mainly because once I get my daughter in bed, I use the time after that to catch up on chores, work or other things I wasn't able to do throughout the day OR by the time I do get in bed, I can't seem to turn my thoughts and my mind "off."

I’m not a doctor, but I know when you are tired, your body doesn’t function the way it should. From what I know from my nursing school days, your hormones can get all out of whack with lack of sleep & can cause a crazy appetite which can definitely cause you to gain weight.

Limit the Screen

Other things I do to help me sleep include putting the phone down sooner before I get into bed and limiting screen time in the evenings. The nights that I’m not up scrolling I feel like I fall asleep a lot more easily and quickly.

Journal or Reading

For some reason this knocks me OUT. I can have every intention to read a chapter or two in a book I’m reading and soon after I pick it up, I end up passed out in a deep sleep.

Another thing that helps me fall and stay asleep on those days when I just can't seem to turn my mind off is product called Sleepworks. I don't use it every night, but definitely on the nights that I am tossing and turning and can't seem to fall asleep easily. I don’t feel groggy in the morning and it helps me stay asleep and feel well-rested when I wake up in the morning.

When I sleep good, I feel good. When I feel good, I’m a great mom & a great wife. We deserve to take care of ourselves in order to better care for our families, so I hope you take some time and sleep well tonight. 😴
